Fez – Amid Algeria’s recurrent accusations directed towards Morocco for reestablishing ties with Israel, Algiers is said to seek mediation for normalization with Tel Aviv.

The Palestinian News Network, also known as Shfanews, reported that Algerian President, Abdelmajid Tebboune requested that President of Palestinian National Authority Mahmoud Abbas Abu Mazen mediate a “gradual” normalization of ties with Israel.

Shfanews tweeted on its official account that the mediation between Algeria and Israel for a gradual normalization of ties was “discussed” between the two parties during Abbas’s visit to Algeria.

According to its “private” sources, Shfanews said that Tebboune entrusted Abbas with a “special message to Israel,” in which he calls for “establishing peace with [Israel] in a gradual manner.”

The news outlet added that the Algerian president pleaded with the Palestinian officials to be a mediator between Algiers and Tel Aviv in order to normalize diplomatic ties gradually.

Abbas this week traveled on a three-day trip to Algeria, where he met Tebboune for the first time. Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad Al-Maliki said the visit comes as a preparation stage for the Arab League’s next summit.

The Palestinian official explained that both sides discussed “making the Palestinian issue the focal issue on the agenda of the upcoming Arab summit.” Additionally, addressing the “Algerian role in the United Nations and in international and regional organizations” was on the agenda of the visit, noted Al-Maliki.

Algeria will host the Arab League’s summit in March 2022. The pan-Arab gathering will aim to address, according to previous statements by President Tebboune, “the Arab position on the Palestinian issue as well as the reform of the Arab League.”

The news of Algeria seeking mediation to normalize ties with Israel comes amid Algiers’ sharp criticism of Rabat for reestablishing ties with Tel Aviv.

Algeria has repeatedly voiced its opposition to the resumption of ties between Israel and Morocco.

The Algerian Minister of Communication, Ammar Belhimer, stated in September that Algeria was “the subject of a real and systematic war from several parties, foremost of which is the Moroccan-Zionist alliance.”
