Rabat – The Irish Embassy in Morocco informed Irish citizens and residents of a scheduled flight from Marrakech to Dublin on December 4th.
On behalf of Ryanair, the Irish foreign ministry contacted Moroccan officials on December 3 to arrange special flights for its passengers stranded in Morocco.
For this reason, a request for authorization has been submitted to Moroccan authorities.
On Wednesday, December 3, the Irish foreign ministry stated that they will be able to organize repatriation flights from Marrakech to Dublin on December 4. “No further flight to Dublin planned,” said the Irish Embassy.
Ryanair has decided to postpone all its flights to Morocco until February 1, 2022. The carrier said in a statement that this is due to the “lack of communication from the side of the Moroccan government.”
The reason behind Ryanair’s decision is the uncertainty as to when Morocco’s travel ban will be lifted, the company said in a statement.
However, Morocco national carrier Royal Air Maroc (RAM) has confirmed it will be carrying special flights from Morocco to Belgium, Canada, Spain, and Italy between December 4-6.
Special flights come after a decision by Moroccan authoritiesn to suspend all flights to and from Morocco, which entered into effect on November 29.
Morocco’s decision comes with several European and African countries reported cases of contamination with the new “Omicron” COVID-19 variant that was discovered in southern African countries
The measure aims to preserve the progress Morocco has made in the fight against the virus in recent months.
The Omicron variant was first detected in Botswana and South Africa, where it was discovered and reported to the World Health Organization last week.
