Rabat – Mehdi Bensaid, the Moroccan minister of Youth, Culture and Communication, has said that different options are being studied to resolve the situation of several assistants who received a measly wage of MAD 1,080 ($116.35) a year.
These assistants were working for the ministry for years while only receiving MAD 90 ($9.70) a month, but Bensaid said he would explore several options to settle their situation, while contracting them at minimum wage from January 2022.
The ministry has allocated a budget of MAD 90 million ($9.6 million) to resolve the problem, Bensaid announced on Monday during a hearing at the House of Representatives.
According to reports, 2,030 people are concerned with the problem, some of whom have been working with the ministry and its varying organizations for 20 years.
The assistants worked in establishments such as protection centers for women and children, and youth centers.
Until now, these assistants were working for only MAD 1,080 a year, with most of their money coming from tips and assistance from associations. They also did not benefit from any social protection nets.
“An annual budget has been allocated so that they can have the minimum wage from January,” the ministry specified. A legal solution to contract the workers and provide them with social protections is also being worked on.
One option at the moment is to contract them with the respective associations that they have been working with. Another option would be to collaborate with local authorities to integrate the associations with said authorities, including the workers in question.
The ministry explained that the third option would be to delegate management to municipal authorities who would then be able to recruit the workers as employees for their projects.
