Rabat – Lionel Messi is one of four Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) players to have tested positive for COVID-19, according to a medical update by the club on Sunday.
Juan Bernat, Sergio Rico, and Nathan Bitumazala are the other players who received a positive result on their tests.
The medical update said the players are currently in isolation and undergoing appropriate protocols.
“The first priority is health,” PSG manager Mauricio Pochettino said in a press conference. “This is the most important thing I wish for all of us and the PSG family.”
“We have to put our families first after a very difficult year for the players and the staff with all of the COVID-19 cases and the very intense schedule,” he added.
The club is scheduled to play against Vannes on Monday as part of the French Cup’s round of 32.
PSG’s medical update also contained an update on player Neymar Jr’s injury.
“Neymar JR will continue his treatment in Brazil until 9 January with members of the Paris Saint-Germain medical and performance staff,” the website says.
The Brazilian player is expected to return to training in 3 weeks time.
Neymar sprained his ankle back in November during a game against St Etienne, suffering ligament damage.
Messi joined the Parisian club in August, and has since scored one Ligue goal and 5 Champions League goals.
He won his seventh Ballon d’Or back in November, extending his record for most titles won.
Paris Saint-Germain is currently on the top of France’s Ligue 1, with a 13 point lead over second-placed Nice.
