The Casablanca wholesale fruits and vegetables market has set a new high in terms of tonnage, projected at 1,500,000 tonnes, in 2021.
According to a statement from Casablanca Prestations, the infrastructure’s corporate manager since 2015, the market’s revenue has surpassed last year’s mark of MAD 150 million ($16.30 million), the second greatest performance since its inauguration in 1986.
The same source highlighted that the market achieved this success despite the pandemic, which has had a substantial impact on demand in critical sectors for the activity, such as the hotel and restaurant industries.
The communal equipment has shown significant resilience throughout the health crisis.
In the midst of Morocco’s epidemic, the market, which attracts nearly half of the volume of commodities passing through wholesale marketplaces in Morocco, has adapted to this market reality to assure a normal and consistent supply of fruit and vegetables.
According to the press release, the market infrastructure upgrade program was completed in 2021 with the completion of the second part of the market road restoration, which totaled 130,000 m2.

The wholesale market for fruits and vegetables, which spans 26 hectares, sees between 600 and 1000 trucks and 30 to 60 thousand visitors each day. It is the municipality of Casablanca’s second largest source of revenue, with almost 5000 active users.
According to the Moroccan National Union of Associations of Wholesale Markets of Vegetables and Fruits, the industry earns more than MAD 350 million ($38.05 million) annually.
More than 4,700 people work in Morocco’s 38 wholesale fruit and vegetable marketplaces.
