Rabat – France has opened an investigation into the murder of a 79-year-old French tourist after a man stabbed her to death on January 15 in Tiznit, Morocco.
News outlet France24 announced that the French prosecutor’s office is investigating the case and aims to determine whether the suspect had “terrorist motives.”
Belgian authorities also anounced that they have opened an investigation into the attempted murder of a Belgian national in the city of Agadir.
On January 15, a 31-year old Moroccan man stabbed a Frenchwoman to death in Tiznit in the Souss-Massa region of Morocco. A surveillance camera caught the suspect in the act.
During his escape to Agadir, the suspect attempted to murder two more tourists, including a Belgian national. The Belgian tourist sustained serious injuries during the attack.
Moroccan police announced the arrest of the suspect on the day of the attacks.
A preliminary investigation found that the man suffered from mental disorders.
A court in Sale confirmed the man’s suspected mental health issues earlier this week. A source close to the investigation revealed that the man made statements which indicated he needs admission to a psychiatric hospital.
The suspect said in his police statements that he heard a “demonic voice” asking him to commit the crimes.
The Sale court, in coordination with the public prosecutor office, ordered the admission of the suspect to the Errazi hospital for medical examination.
A source close to the investigation told AFP news outlet that Morocco’s prosecutor’s office tasked the Moroccan Central Bureau of Judicial Investigation (BCIJ) to further investigate the case.
