Rabat – The perpetrator of the murder of a French tourist in Tiznit, a town in the Moroccan Souss-Massa region, suffered mental disorders, according to preliminary investigations by police.
A statement from the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGSN) said the 31-year-old man had been admitted to the psychiatry department of the Hassan I hospital in Tiznit from September 25 to October 25 at the request of local authorities.
Search carried out at the suspect’s home in Guelmim, southern Morocco, enabled police to seize 13 prescriptions from his psychiatrist, a source close to the investigation told Moroccan outlet Le360.
The suspect will be charged for intentional homicide of a 79 French woman in a market.
He also attempted to murder two other tourists, including a Belgian national, in a cafe in Agadir.
The source close to investigation ruled out terrorism motives.
Police arrested the suspect after surveillance camera footage showed him fatally stabbing the Frenchwoman.
After identifying the suspect’s identity, police arrested him red handed while he was attempting to kill two other tourists who were in a cafe near the beach in Agadir.
Police put the suspect in custody for further judicial investigation to shed light on the circumstances and motives of his actions.
