Rabat – Regional judicial police forces in Tangier have an international drug trafficking operation on Saturday in a statement, local authorities said in a statement.
The investigation surrounding the case eventually led the authorities to arrest the owner of a carpentry workshop in the Bni Ouassine douar red-handed.
The operation relied on the workshop owner and two assistants, who hid large quantities of drugs like chira in the wooden planks of the warehouse, for purposes of illegal international exporting.
A statement by the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) detailed the operation and the modus operandi of the criminals.
The wooden boards were hollowed out to hide the drugs, before reassembling them with the usage of chemical coatings to avoid detection by police canines, the statement noted.
The DGSN seized a huge 2.1 tons of the drug in the operation, with extraction of drugs from the warehouse still being underway. The quantity is expected to go up as the operation goes on.
According to the authorities’ statement, the accomplices in the operation are currently undergoing procedures of investigation by the judicial police.
They have been ordered by the prosecutor’s office to detail the ins and outs of their operation to the authorities, which is expected to aid the DGSN’s investigation to uncover the domestic and international pieces of the operation.
The DGSN’s responsibilities encompass counterterrorism operations, as well as countering irregular migration and trafficking operations.
The directorate released an annual report last year, detailing the most significant numbers of the year.
In terms of combating drug trafficking, the authorities said they handled more than 80,000 cases related to drugs, involving 103,589 people, including 261 foreigners.
Notably, there was an increase in the amounts of cocaine seized, as well as a decrease in the amounts of hashish and heroin.
