Rabat – The Spanish Foreign Affairs Ministry has assured that relations with Morocco are steadily improving as expected.
Europa Press quoted sources from the Spanish ministry, saying that the improvement of relations between the two countries is advancing at the rate needed to restore the two countries’ desired 21st-century relationship.
The sources added that the process requires time, which is “why the government does not want to reveal more details about its efforts to avoid undermining” ongoing progress.
The Spanish government is looking for a new relationship that is not “marked by crisis every few years. For this, trust must be generated,” the sources added.
Spain’s foreign policy priority is to improve relations and maintain strategic partnerships with Morocco.
Earlier this month, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said he is looking forward to continuing bilateral cooperation with morocco.
During his remarks, Sanchez described his country as an “important ally” of Morocco, stressing the importance of maintaining important relations with Rabat.
The same remarks were repeated co instantly by Spanish officials, including Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares.
His remarks are in line with Spain’s strategy to amend and restore normalcy to ties between the two countries following an unprecedented crisis.
Last year, ties between the two countries experienced a diplomatic crisis with intense bilateral tensions emerging following Spain’s decision to host Brahim Ghali, the leader of the separatist Polisario Front in April 2021.
The Spanish sheltering of the Polisario Front leader angered Morocco. The Moroccan government described the Spanish behavior as a betrayal of diplomatic reciprocity and recalled its Madrid ambassador, Karima Benyaich, for consultations in May 2021.
The Moroccan ambassador has not yet returned to Madrid.
Spain’s King Felipe VI last month called for intensive work and efforts to strengthen ties with Rabat.
