Rabat – The Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union has praised King Mohammed VI’s ongoing efforts to support the Palestinian cause and defend Jerusalem.

On the occasion of its 32nd session in Cairo, the union unanimously supported the King’s efforts to protect Palestinians not only as sovereign of Morocco but also as the chairman of the Al-Quds Committee and Bayt Mal Al-Quds Agency.

Collectively, the Arab parliamentary representatives noted the “illegality of colonial settlement in all its forms and manifestations” as they called on the UN Security Council to implement adopted resolutions regarding Israeli occupation and illegal settlement construction.

Additionally, they urged the security council to compel the Israeli occupation to end ongoing ethnic cleansing in occupied Jerusalem – Sheikh Jarrah and Silwan neighborhoods – and Palestinian valleys. These areas witness the expulsion of residents, seizure, and demolition of houses, and confiscation of cemetery lands and endowment properties of Muslims and Christians.

The Arab Inter-Parliamentary Union further stressed the need to support the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees (UNRWA) to carry out its mission until the implementation of the United Nations General Assembly resolution on Palestinian rights of return, while calling on international donors to finance the agency.

Along with reiterating support for the Palestinian cause, the union’s 32nd session tackled the role of parliaments in achieving economic integration and supporting Arab women.

The meeting is part of a series of initiatives to develop joint Arab action and enhance parliamentary cooperation as a fundamental pillar of Arab solidarity to address key challenges in the region.

Morocco-Palestine’s long-standing diplomatic relations remain instrumental for both countries and as a means to achieve peace between Israel and Palestine.

Earlier this month, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said that he shares “special ties” with King Mohammed VI, in a meeting with the newly appointed Moroccan Ambassador to Palestine Abderrahim Meziane. These relations go beyond the two figures as they extend to the late Moroccan rulers, King Mohammed V and King Hassan II.

In addition to maintaining good historical relations with Palestine, Morocco directly supports the Palestinian people through programs launched, financed, and implemented by Bayt Mal Al-Quds Agency. Founded by the late King Hassan II, the agency contributes to the socio-economic development of Jerusalem.

In January, the agency allocated $1 million in funds for social development projects in Jerusalem to benefit orphans, youth, and needy families.
