Rabat – Morocco’s admission to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) “is the best thing for all of us,” according to Sidie Mohamed Tunis, the speaker of the regional club.
The speaker of the regional organization made his remarks during a meeting on Monday with Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita in Rabat.
“We are going to see generally how to work towards Morocco’s full membership of ECOWAS because we firmly believe that this is the best thing for all of us,” Tunis told reporters following his meeting with Bourita.
Morocco announced its aspiration to join ECOWAS in the wake of its readmission to the African Union in January 2017.
The Moroccan government suggested that the country’s ECOWAS bid reflects its desire to boost its South-South agenda and further intra-African solidarity while cementing its role as a continental leader in rising to the emerging challenges facing African countries.
For Morocco, the bid also seeks to strengthen the North African country’s well-documented investment in intra-African development projects.
Commenting on ECOWAS countries’ positions on Morocco’s membership bid, Tunis said: “We are looking at strategies, possibilities, and possibly constraints but for now my colleagues and I are very positive about it.”
During his meeting with Bourita, the ECOWAS official also emphasized King Mohammed VI’s pan-African efforts, particularly stressing the importance of wide-ranging relations between Morocco and the West African regional organization.
Tunis arrived this week in Morocco to participate in the 6th annual parliamentary forum on social justice under the theme of “Social dialogue and challenges of the social state,” an event the Moroccan House of Councilors organized in partnership with Morocco’s Economic, Social, and Environmental Council.
