Rabat – Ukraine and Russia are set to hold negotiations at the Belarusian-Ukrainian border, according to Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
In a message the Ukrainian president sent on the Telegram application, he stressed that a delegation of the Ukrainian government will meet for talks with Russian officials.
“We agreed that the Ukrainian delegation would meet with the Russian delegation without preconditions … near the Pripyat River,” Zelenskyy announced after a call with Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko.
The day and time of the meeting was not revealed.
“I do not really believe in the outcome of this meeting, but let them try so that later not a single citizen of Ukraine has any doubt that I, as President, tried to stop the war, when there was even a small, but still a chance,” Volodymyr said, quoted by Sky news.
Volodymyr, who previously rejected an offer to meet in Belarus and urged his country to fight, agreed to send a delegation following Russia’s nuclear forces on high alert on February 27.
Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered nuclear forces put on high alert in response to what he called “aggressive statements” by NATO.
According to Ukraine’s health ministry, civilian deaths amounted to 352 people, including 14 children.
Meanwhile, Russia’s defense ministry urged Ukrainian civilians to leave the capital Kyiv.
“We are appealing to Kyiv’s population to leave the city on a certain road that we can guarantee safe passage, I want to reiterate that Russian troops are only hitting military targets,” ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov, quoted by Aljazeera.
Secretary General of NATO Jens Stoltenberg commended in a tweet “the bravery of the Ukrainian president, the people, and armed forces of Ukraine,” adding, “NATO allies are stepping up support with air–defense missiles, anti-tank weapons, and humanitarian and financial aid [for Ukraine].”
