Rabat – The Republic of Malta is preparing to open a consulate in Casablanca on February 23 to consolidate bilateral cooperation with Morocco.

Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita welcomed Malta’s Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Evarist Bartolo in Rabat today. The meeting concluded with the announcement of the opening of the new consulate.

“Building on their 50-year relationship, Morocco and Malta welcome the inauguration tomorrow of the consulate in Casablanca, which strengthens economic and trade cooperation between the two countries in various sectors such as the pharmaceutical industry,” Evarist Bartolo commented in a press conference.

Malta’s chief of diplomacy also thanked Morocco for supporting his country’s candidacy for the UN Security Council (2023-2014), noting Malta’s recognition of Morocco’s efforts to find a lasting political solution to the Western Sahara conflict.

“We recognize Morocco’s efforts within the framework of the UN process for a mutually acceptable solution to the dispute over the Sahara in a region that does not need more problems,” stated Bartolo.

Commenting on the meeting, Nasser Bourita said that “the visit of Evarist Bartolo is part of the positive dynamics that bilateral relations [between Malta and Morocco] have experienced in recent years and confirms the shared desire to further strengthen cooperation in different sectors.”

At the regional level, Bourita and Bartolo recalled their countries’ common vision on the Libyan crisis, noting that the solution “can only be Libyan and for the Libyans.” The minister also highlighted that European peace is interlinked to African stability.

The two chief diplomats articulated similar points in March 2020. Ahead of the 8th Ministerial Conference on Migration and Development (5+5 Dialogue) in Marrakech, Bourita held a meeting with his Maltian counterpart to review and reinforce bilateral economic relations.
