Rabat – The Moroccan League Against Epilepsy (LMCE) has announced that over 400,000 are affected by the disease in Morocco.

As it commemorates February 8, the National Day Against Epilepsy, LMCE says its main aim is to raise awareness about the disease to correct the stereotypical ideas and ensure that those who suffer from epilepsy feel less lonely.

Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder, in which brain activity becomes abnormal, causing seizures or periods of unusual behavior, sensations and sometimes loss of awareness.

Seizures are bursts of electrical activity in the brain that temporarily affect how it works and can cause a wide range of symptoms.

Epilepsy affects both women and men and can start at any age, but it usually starts either in childhood or in people over 60.

It is the most common among the serious neurological conditions, and one of the most common non-communicable diseases in the world.

LMCE is working to provide Moroccan citizens with tools that will help ensure better management of this disease, including a platform dedicated to assistance, support, and awareness-raising, the league said in a press release.

“A toll-free number will be set up in the coming weeks to guide individuals and families of people with epilepsy,” it added.

Najib Kissani, president of LMCE  noted that due to prejudices about epilepsy, “many people are subject to exclusion and marginalization.”

He added, “We aim to inform and raise awareness among the general public to enable better integration of people suffering from this disease.”

LMCE aims to show to the public that in 80% of cases, a constant treatment can stabilize the disease, allowing the person to carry on a completely normal life.

A surgical operation can be performed in severe cases, LMCE said, underlining that it is necessary to consult a neurologist for a complete diagnosis.

LMCE’s work focuses on providing a better understanding of the chronic disease while supporting people with dementia and promoting research aimed at improving diagnosis.
