Rabat – Morocco’s tomatoes exports to Spain exceeded 80 million kilograms in 2021, new data showed.

The number demonstrates a significant increase compared to 2014 when Spain’s imports from Morocco’s products exceeded 18 million kilograms.

Fruits and vegetable imports and exports website Fresh Plaza said that Spain has increased tomato imports from Morocco by 347.84% in the last eight years.

According to the data, the value of tomatoes Morocco sold Spain experienced a “constant increase” annually.

The number moved from 13.71 million in 2014 to 83.2 million in 2021

The price of tomatoes Morocco sold to Spain increased by 35.53%.

“If in 2014 the average price at which Spanish importers paid Morocco for tomatoes was 0.76 euros per kilo, in 2021 that average price increased to 1.03 euros per kilo,” Fresh Plaza said.

The number is the highest of the entire period reviewed, the news outlet said, citing data compiled by Hortoinfo.

The EU Agricultural Outlook 2021-2031 report said that Morocco remains the number one provider of tomatoes to the European Union.

The report indicates that Morocco’s tomatoes are a strong competitor to Spanish products.

Morocco’s tomato products outperformed Spain’s tomato exports to the UK.

Recent data from Hortoinfo shows that Morocco increased its tomato exports to the UK by 33.68% since the implementation of Brexit.

The UK, however, reduced its tomato purchases from Spain by 24.1% between January and November 2021.

In October 2021, 200 farmers from Almeria, Spain, as well as representatives of fruit and vegetable companies, staged a protest around the city’s port against Spain’s importing of Moroccan agricultural products.

The farmers consider Morocco’s products as a threat to their local production.
