Rabat – Moroccan-Dutch football player Oussama Idrissi has emphasized how the World Cup game between Morocco and the Netherlands will be important for him, as some of his colleagues play for the Oranje while other teammates play for Morocco.
“It will be a very special match for me,” he said in an interview with Fox Mexico.
The Moroccan international represents Morocco at the international level but also played for the Dutch youth national teams from 2011 to 2019.
He chose to represent Morocco in 2019 under former head coach Hervé Renard.
“It’s a historic match for me. I think it’s also historic for Moroccans who live in the Netherlands today. I’m also very proud to be Moroccan and to have been born in the Netherlands. I have always cherished that,” he said.
For him, he has “a lot of affection” for both countries.
But he had the chance to play for Morocco, which he will support in tonight’s game at 2 a.m.
He emphasized how the experience of players developed both in Morocco and abroad, as well as their discipline, has helped the North African country develop its football.
In the interview, Idrissi also answered questions about whether the weather conditions in Mexico, where the game will take place, will affect them.
But he stressed that Moroccan players are accustomed to similar weather conditions, especially as Morocco also has the Sahara.
“In a large part of our country, it’s hot. We’re used to playing in temperatures that can reach 45 degrees Celsius,” Idrissi said.
Idrissi now plays as a winger for Liga MX club Pachuca in Mexico.
Many websites have been criticizing Morocco for having several players born and trained across the world, despite the players’ own choices and roots, which keep them attached to their country of origin
