Rabat – Multinationals Repsol and Ravago intend to construct Morocco’s largest polypropylene (PP) compounding plant for the automotive industry. It will be installed in Tangier’s free zone and is set to be operational in 2023.

The Spanish energy multinational Repsol has been operating in Morocco since 2010. Repsol announced in November 2020 its exit from Morocco, in order to reduce its presence in hydrocarbon exploration and production activities in four countries, Morocco included.

The Spanish energy company reverted from that decision and is now planning on investing alongside Ravage in a PP manufacturing plant in Morocco.

Repsol said in a statement that the plant will have a production capacity of 18,500 tons per year to meet local customer demand, adding that it will be outfitted with cutting-edge technology and supplied with base resins manufactured in Spain.

As part of the agreement with Ravago, Repsol would also market the majority of the products produced at the new Moroccan plant under the Repsol Isplen and Repsol Impacto brands. Ravago will produce polyamide (PA), polycarbonate/acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (PC-ABS), and polybutene polyamide terephthalate (PBT) compounds for the automotive industry.

PP compounds will be used in Morocco to manufacture doors and engine panels, bumpers, heating and lighting systems, and other items.

According to Repsol, the opening of this new plant aims to expand the range of services available in Morocco for specific materials used in the manufacture of automobile parts. The majority of these products will be destined for assembly lines in car factories in Tangier, Kenitra, and Casablanca. It also implies an increase in local production in the Kingdom, which should benefit the Maghreb country’s national economy.

The Moroccan Ministry of Industry is also supporting the project, as are equipment manufacturers, the Renault Group, and the Stellantis Group.
