Morocco’s under 23 (U23) Atlas Lions national team has summoned the Belgian-Moroccan talent Ilias Sebaoui to its training camp, according to Belgian Press.
Like other previous Moroccan internationals, Sebaoui said that he will find himself confronted with the dilemma of which country to represent in the future. The rising talent told Het Nieuwsblad that it “would be a heartbreaking choice.” “My roots are in Morocco, my grandfather was born there,” he said, adding that he only visits Morocco during vacations.
With an option to play for the Belgian national team in the future, Sebaoui said that he still “hasn’t made a choice yet.”
Sebaoui has recently expressed to Belgian media his wish to play for Morocco and that he wishes to wear the Atlas Lions’ jersey in international competitions, saying that he will always be “open to a call-up to join the Moroccan national team.”
“It has always been a dream to represent my country and all fans and supporters,” he said in an interview.
Beerschot’s wonderkid midfielder is considered this “year’s revelation,” for his spectacular season with the Belgian club according to the Belgian Press.
Sebaoui is following the footsteps of Moroccan international Tarik Tissoudali, who spent years of formative experience at Beerschot before signing for La Gantoise. The young player said he is taking him as his “model.”
DMSport quoted Sebaoui saying, “Cristiano Ronaldo has always been a favorite of mine since I was a child. But now, because we’re in the same league, I’m focusing a lot on Tarik Tissoudali. I see a lot of myself in him, and I’m acquainted with him.”
The talented Belgian-Moroccan player has a contract with Beerschot until June 30, 2025.
The U23 Atlas Lions’ training camp is planned to take place in Rabat from between 21-30 March.
