Rabat – The last preparatory meeting for this year’s African Lion military exercises was concluded on Thursday, March 25, with participation from both the Moroccan and American armed forces.
The exercises are expected to take place this June in various Moroccan regions and cities such as Agadir, Ben Guerir, and Tan Tan.
Some of the operations are also expected to take place in other African countries like Tunisia and Ghana.
The goal will be to train for counter terrorist operations, land and air exercises, as well as marine training.
The operation as a whole serves to improve the technical and operational capabilities of both armies, as well as the cooperation capacities between them.
The operation promises to be bigger and more ambitious this year, according to previous statements by US Army Captain James Gulielmi and organizers.
Many analysts see the exercise and the heavy involvement of Morocco in its coordination as a sign of the country’s important relation to the United States and the role it plays in the African region.
The exercises also present a unique opportunity for Morocco’s forces to work together with the US and exchange valuable information and expertise.
Analysts have argued that the military cooperation also will translate to greater economic and political cooperation in the future.
US Army officials had expressed as much during the operations last year, calling Morocco “a leader in the Great Maghreb region” and saying that it plays an indispensable role in the US’ operations in the MENA region.
