Rabat – Morocco has implemented the UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) recommendations on the ethics of artificial intelligence (AI).
The recommendations were adopted on the sidelines of the 41st session of the General Conference of UNESCO held in November 2021 in Paris.
“Morocco is among the pioneer countries in the implementation of UNESCO’s recommendations on the common values and principles necessary to ensure the development of AI,” said UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay during her work visit to the North African country.
“AI is a new axis in our existing cooperation with Morocco,” Azoulay added, lauding Morocco-UNESCO cooperation in several fields including preservation of heritage, cultural life, and education.
During the meeting, minister Benmoussa said that Morocco is committed to implementing UNESCO’s recommendation, which aims to use technology and reduce the risks associated with it.
Benmoussa also highlighted that the recommendations are in line with Morocco’s New Development Model (NDM).
Ghita Mezzour, Minister Delegate for digital transition and Administrative Reform, welcomed the recommendations, saying, “A national commission will be set up to monitor the AI situation in the country.”
Mezzour highlighted that the commission will be set to establish a roadmap to implement the provisions of the recommendation on the ethics of AI,” she stressed.
Director General of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) Salim AlMalik as well as other Moroccan and UN officials also participated in the meeting.
During her visit to Morocco, UNESCO’s chief met with Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch and Minister of Culture Mehdi Bensaid to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Rabat’s becoming a world heritage site.
