Rabat – Morocco will host the first intergovernmental conference to discuss the implementation of the Global Compact for Migration and enhance global cooperation on issues related to migration and refugees.
The conference, which will take place Friday, March 25, will convene “Champion Countries” to discuss challenges, including migration management.
“Champion Countries” are the UN Member States who adopted the Global Compact at an intergovernmental conference in Marrakech, Morocco, on December 10, 2018.
The United Nations Migration Network and the International Organization for Migration (OIM) will also participate in the Global Impact, the Moroccan Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation said in a press release on Thursday.
The event will also highlight the countries’ commitment to implementing the Charter.
The compact, which covers all areas of international migration, is the first inter-governmental agreement prepared by the United Nations.
The conference aims to reaffirm Morocco’s global and continental leadership in the field of migration, which aligns with the vision of King Mohammed VI for migration, the release added.
King Mohammed VI is the founder of the African Union for Migration, which contributed to the launch of various initiatives, including the African Agenda on Migration and the African Migration Observatory.
The conference will witness the ratification of the “Rabat Declaration” and the approval of recommendations by the leading countries.
The New York Declaration’s Annex II kicked off a series of intergovernmental consultations and negotiations aimed at creating a Global Compact for safe, orderly, and regular migration.
The first International Migration Review Forum (IMRF) will take place in New York from May 17 to 20, 2022.
