Irish MMA star Conor McGregor is reportedly in the running to buy West-London football club Chelsea, currently owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich.
The notorious Irish MMA fighter, who had previously expressed interest in purchasing Manchester United, posted a tweet in which he can be seen replying to a message that reads, “Chelsea for sale £3 bn. Let’s buy it.”
Abramovich has been under pressure recently for his close friendship with Russian President Vladimir Putin, especially after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The Chelsea owner has decided to put the club up for sale.
Abramovich announced on March 2 that he will sell Chelsea Football Club, 19 years after purchasing the club and leading it to sports glory, and that he would give the proceeds to victims of the Ukraine war. “This includes providing critical funds towards the urgent and immediate needs of victims, as well as supporting the long-term work of recovery,” he said.
The price of the club has not been decided yet, but according to McGregor’s tweet it is supposedly set at “£3 bn.”
Note that the Irish fighter is known to be a great fan of football. It remains to be seen whether his desire is serious or not.
Following the Russian military offensive in Ukraine, FIFA and UEFA announced their decision to ban all Russian teams, whether national or club teams, from participating in all their competitions until further notice.
