Rabat – Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska celebrated today the joint declaration issued by Spain and Morocco on Thursday, marking the end of a year-long crisis.
Marlaska commented on King Mohammed VI’s meeting with Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez held yesterday in Rabat.
Sanchez landed in Rabat on Thursday following an invitation extended by the King of Morocco. The invitation followed Spain’s new position, endorsing Morocco’s Autonomy Plan as the most serious and credible solution to end the dispute over Western Sahara.
The meeting between Sanchez and King Mohammed VI represents a “restoration of relations” between the two countries, Marlaska told the press today.
He said the meeting also ended a “moment of disagreement between two fraternal, countries, friends” collaborating in different fields.
Marlaska also commented on Morocco and Spain’s decision to reopen borders immediately.
He emphasized that the two countries are establishing a working group to ensure the gradual reopening of borders, taking into account security challenges.
He told the press that the reopening of borders will also allow the free movement of passengers and goods, as well as restore customs in the Spanish enclaves of Melilla and Ceuta.
He said the reopening of borders will be “examined and studied, but it will be gradual and by mutual agreement.”
Morocco and Spain agreed on Thursday to open a new phase of diplomatic relations based on a “sustainable and ambitious roadmap” to preserve bilateral ties.
The two countries further agreed to advance cooperation in different fields, prioritizing education and vocational training, culture, trade, security, and irregular migration management.
The joint declaration released by the two countries additionally emphasized that both countries are opening a new phase of bilateral relations based on mutual trust, respect, and transparency.
