Rabat – Several provinces in Morocco are set to experience hot weather in the coming days, the country’s General Directorate of Meteorology (DMN) warned today.

DMN issued an orange level weather alert, forecasting temperatures varying between 36 and 39 degrees Celcius to affect the provinces of  Inezgane-Ait Melloul, Tiznit, Sidi Ifni, Chtouka-Ait Baha, Taroudant, and Guelmim from Sunday to Monday.

In the same weather alert, DMN said that high temperatures ranging from 38 to 41 degrees Celcius will hit the provinces of Tan Tan, Tarfaya, Es-Smara, Boujdour, Laayoune, and Oued Eddahab.

The heatwave is expected to hit the aforementioned provinces starting on Sunday and running until Monday.

Morocco has in recent months experienced a severe drought as rainfall in the North African country hit an unprecedented record-low, raising fears over the country’s economic growth.

To mitigate the economic crisis caused by the lack of rainfall, King Mohammed VI has launched a MAD 10 billion ($1 billion) program to support the agricultural sector and counter the impact of the drought.

After months of adverse weather, heavy rain battered several regions of Morocco in early March, raising Moroccans’ spirits and restoring hope of a good agricultural harvest in 2022.

Yet, the World Bank forecasts that the Moroccan economy is set to slow to 1.1% in 2022 due to the decreasing agricultural revenues amid the severe drought that had hit the country earlier this year.

As well as the severe drought, the financial institution noted that the ongoing war in Ukraine has aggravated disruptions in the global supply chain, slowing down Morocco’s economic recovery.

Still, it forecasts that the Moroccan economy is expected to rebound to 4.3% in 2023.
