Rabat – Heavy rainfall and snowfall are expected to continue until Monday in several provinces across Morocco, the General Directorate of Meteorology (DMN) has announced.
The rain comes at a critical time with Moroccan farmers and government expressing concerns over the lack of rainfall in the 2021-2022 agricultural season.
DMN is also forecasting snow falls ranging between 10 and 40 centimeters from Sunday at 1 a.m. until Monday at 9 a.m. in several provinces, including Al Haouz, Boulemane, Ifrane, Chichaoua, Al Hoceima, Taza, Azilal, Beni Mellal, Khenifra, Tinghir, Ouarzazate, and Midelt.
Heavy rainfall ranging between 20 to 35 millimeters will continue until Sunday in different provinces, including Skhirate-Temara, Kenitra, Rabat, Sale, Khemisset, Khenifra, Benslimane, Mohammedia, Casablanca, and Mediouna.
Earlier this month, Morocco’s central bank, Bank Al Maghrib (BAM) called for speedy reforms to counter the effects of the ongoing drought due to low rainfall this year.
The bank emphasized that the low rainfall is set to considerably affect Morocco’s economic growth that was projected to reach 7%.
According to BAM, the country’s economic growth may not exceed 3.5% due to the lack of rainfalls.
To mitigate the economic crisis brought about by the drought, King Mohammed VI has launched a MAD 10 billion ($1 billion) program to support the agricultural sector amid a deficit of rainfall.
The King has also called on the government to take all necessary emergency measures to cope with the impact of the deficit of rainfall on the agricultural sector.
