Rabat – Morocco’s Ministry of Islamic Affairs warned today against misleading information about the official dates of religious events such as Eid Al Fitr.

The ministry published a communique today, emphasizing that any announcements of the crescent moon sighting results will be made public exclusively through a press release that Moroccan news agency MAP publishes.

“Any announcement before this release is a misleading announcement,” the ministry warned.

The statement came with Eid Al Fitr just around the corner, with Muslims eagerly awaiting the news when the religious festival will take place.

Unverified social media and outlets often share misleading information on religious dates for commercial purposes.

The Ministry of Islamic Affairs is yet to unveil the official date of Eid Al Fitr following the sighting of the crescent moon over the weekend.

The moon sighting committee will confirm whether Monday is the first day of Shawaal, the tenth month in the Islamic calendar.

Shawaal marks the end of Ramadan.

Astronomers in Morocco are expecting Eid Al Fitr to fall on Monday, May 2.
