Rabat – Eid Al Fitr 2022 will fall on Monday, May 2 in France, according to an announcement by the French Muslim Council (CFMC).
The CFMC, known in French as “Conseil Français du Culte Musulman,” is in charge of determining and announcing the date for Eid Al Fitr in France.
The council relies on astronomical calculations of the moon cycle, as well as a moon sighting committee, to determine the date once the moon hits its new phase.
Eid Al Fitr is the day in which Muslims can stop practicing the compulsory Ramadan fast, and is marked by celebrations, prayers, and family events.
Although Islam is not the majority religion in France, the Muslim population is still sizable, with around 6 million Muslims taking constituting 10% of the country’s population.
France and Germany have the highest numbers of Muslims in Europe as of 2016, according to Pew Research. The numbers are influenced by the presence of immigrants from Arab countries and North Africa.
Families celebrate the occasion by attending prayers at their local mosques, preparing fancy breakfasts, and buying new clothes and gifts for their family members.
Muslims are also required to give to charity or those in need during Ramadan, before the day.
