Rabat – Eid Al Fitr 2022 in Australia is expected to begin on Monday, May 2, according to the President of the Australian Institute of Islamic Culture Ibrahim Abu Mohamed.
Abu Mohamed said in a Facebook post on Thursday that after consulting with members of the Australian Fatwa Council and local and global observatories, the last day of Ramadan is expected to be on Sunday, May 1.
In a communique, the Council shared their astronomical calculations on the Eid Al Fitr date, announcing that May 2 is expected to mark the first day of Shawwal – the tenth month of the Islamic calendar.
Eid Al Fitr usually falls on the first day of Shawwal.
Australia celebrated the first day of Ramadan on April 2 like other countries including Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
The number of Muslims in Australia amounted to more than 600,000 individuals in 2016.
Eid Al Fitr is not a public holiday in the Oceanian country, but Islamic businesses and organizations may alter their business hours during this day.
During this day, worshippers flock for early morning prayers with traditional clothes. Families later gather to share the feast and celebrate their first breakfast after a month of fasting.
Across the world, the feast can last for up to three days, especially in Muslim countries.
Eid Al Fitr celebrations may begin on different dates depending on the country since the new moon may be sighted earlier or later in specific locations.
Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Egypt, among other countries in the region, are more likely to celebrate the beginning of Eid Al Fitr 2022 on May 2.
Astronomers in countries like India and Pakistan expect the celebration to begin on May 3.
The official dates of Eid in different countries are yet to be confirmed after the crescent moon sighting scheduled for the weekend.
