Rabat – Eid al-Fitr 2022 is predicted to fall on May 2 in Spain, according to the Islamic Commission of Spain.
On April 12, the commission posted on Instagram an appeal to Spanish institutions and companies to allow a day off for their Muslim workers.
“On May 2, more than two million Muslims in Spain will celebrate the end of Ramadan (IDULFITR),” said the caption.
The request aligns with the cooperation agreement signed between the Spanish state and the Islamic Commission of Spain.
Signed in 1992, the agreement provides legal support for Muslim workers’ requests for a day off during a religious holiday, “provided that there is an agreement between the parties.”
The cited religious holidays include the Islamic new year, achura (tenth day of Muharram), eid al-mawlid (the Prophet’s birth anniversary), laylat al-qadr, al-isra wa al-miraj (27th of Rajab), and eid al-adha.

On April 18, the commission fixed the minimum amount of Zakat al-Fitr at € 5 per person for Muslims living in Spain.
The commission further noted that mosques will collect the Zakat until the Eid al-Fitr prayer to distribute it to the needy, stressing the necessity of Zakat as “a means of social solidarity.”
While the celebrations are dependent on whether the Muslim workers will secure a holiday, Eid al-fitr remains a day of joy and solidarity.
The celebrations might vary based on the country of origin of Muslim migrants in Spain.
Traditions tend to be similar throughout the Muslim world as all Muslims start their day with the Eid prayer before having breakfast with family members and then meeting with friends and loved ones.
Eid is also an opportunity to offer money and gifts to the children.
These eid traditions extend to Moroccans at home and in the diaspora. As of January, Spain’s National Institute of Statistics (INE) reported that more than 880,000 Moroccans live legally in Spain, marking a 0.8% increase compared to January 2021.
