The Association of Car Importers in Morocco reported a 6.26% decrease in car sales in Morocco in March 2022, compared to the same period in 2021.
The importers association said in its monthly statistics that new car sales in Morocco stood at 41,399 for March.
The number of new registrations for passenger cars reached 36,997, a 5.5% decrease from March 2021.
The number of light utility vehicles – cars not only for passenger use – sold fell by 12.16% to 4,422 in the third month of the year, compared to the same period 12 months previous.
Who buys what?
Dacia continues to top the list of most sold cars in Morocco, with a market share of 26.7% at the end of March.
Renault comes second with the company selling 5,606 of its new cars in March, with an estimated market share of 15.16%.
This was followed by Hyundai who sold 4,009 cars in March with a 10.84% market share and Peugeot who sold 2,998 new cars with an 8.11% market share).
Sales of Renault’s light utility vehicles jumped by 68.45%, compared to the previous year.
Dongfeng Sokon brand sales decreased by 40.24% in the same period.
Ford’s sales, meanwhile, increased by 8.45%, with a market share estimated at 13.64%.
Audi car sales decreased to 979 cars at the end of March, with a market share of 2.65% followed by Mercedes (714 cars and a market share of 1.93%), and BMW (651 cars and a market share of 7.76%).
The Association of Car Importers in Morocco also recorded a decrease in Porsche and Jaguar sales, estimated at 8.33% and 3.33%, respectively.
The association also reported decreases in automotive sales in January.
The previous report said that car sales reached 12,439 units in January 2022. The number represents a decrease of 6.72% compared to the same period in 2021.
The automotive sector is one of the key pillars in Morocco’s economy.
The Oxford Business Group said that the auto industry accounted for about 19% of Morocco’s GDP in 2019.
The group predicts the number to increase to reach 24% by 2022.
