Qatari news agency QNA announced Saturday as the first day of Ramadan in Qatar.
Many other countries will celebrate Ramadan on Saturday, including Saudi Arabia and UAE.
Other countries, such as Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore will celebrate the first day of Ramadan on Sunday, April 3.
Ramadan, the ninth month in the Islamic calendar, is when Muslims across the world fast from sunrise to sunset.
During fasting hours, Muslims should abstain from all food and drinks, including water. From dawn to dusk, Muslims are also not allowed to engage in sexual activities, chewing gum, or consuming medicine.
Only people with prescribed medication, the elderely and children who have not reached puberty are exempt from fasting.
Throughout Ramadan, Muslims are encouraged to increase their charitable activities and meditation. Muslims around the world observe Ramadan with extra evening prayers called Taraweeh.
Muslims perform the prayers after Al Isha (night) prayers.
