Rabat – Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Nasser Bourita held a phone call on Friday with his Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba, amid the escalating conflict between Kyiv and Moscow.
The phone call between Bourita and Kuleba comes after Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky recalled his country’s ambassadors to Morocco and Georgia, after failing to do enough to convince the countries to back Ukraine amid Russia’s invasion.
“Ukraine and Morocco enjoy friendly bilateral relations,”the Ukrainian Foreign Minister said in a tweet on April 1.
Kuleba stressed that the two countries “look forward to further strengthening [relations] in all spheres, including food security, boosting trade, and cooperation within international organizations.”

“With all due respect, if there won’t be weapons, won’t be sanctions, won’t be restrictions for Russian business, then please look for other work,” Zelensky said during a video on March 30.
The move is part of Zelensky’s approach to secure more support for Ukraine’s position in the conflict with Russia.
The Ukrainian president, who urged countries to send arms, also said he will be awaiting concrete results in the coming days from Ukraine’s ambassadors in Latin America, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Africa.
Over four million Ukrainians have fled the country since the beginning of the Russian offensive. Thousands of people have been killed and wounded.
Zelensky’s move to recall his ambassador to Morocco came after the North African country emphasized its non-interference principle during a UN General Assembly vote, which called for an immediate end to Russia’s military offensive in Ukraine.
While the country abstained from voting and picking a side, minister Bourita has stressed that Morocco regrets seeing a military escalation that resulted in dire consequences.
Last week, Bourita held phone calls with Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs Sergei Lavrov and Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba to discuss the situation in Ukraine.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs hasn’t issued any press release regarding the details of the calls.
