Rabat – Morocco officially announced Monday, May 2 as the official date of Eid Al Fitr 2022.
Morocco’s Ministry of Islamic Affairs confirmed Monday as Eid Al Fitr in a communique following the sighting of the crescent moon.
Religious observers and astronomers sighted the moon today, declaring that the first day of the Islamic month of Shawwal is on Monday.
Shawwal, the tenth month in the Islamic calendar, marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan.
The announcement means that Morocco will celebrate Eid with the majority of other Arab countries, including UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Egypt, among others.
The aforementioned countries announced the official date of Eid Al Fitr on Saturday. Ramadan completed 30 days in all of Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, and Egypt as well as in other countries, which announced April 2 as the first day of the holy month.
In Morocco, however, Ramadan lasted only 29 days. Previously, Moroccan astronomer Hicham Aissaoui said that this is the fifth year in a row for Moroccans to fast for only 29 days.
Moroccans will commence Eid Al Fitr celebrations through a morning Eid prayer called Salat Al Eid, when millions of people gather at mosques.
Following prayers, families gather for a morning breakfast during which a lot of sweets and delicious meals are served.
Making visits to family members is also common practice among Moroccans during Eid. Parents and their children usually wear traditional clothing, such as the djellaba in the morning of Eid.
Following breakfast, children commonly wear new clothes bought specifically for Eid Al Fitr.
