Rabat – A 20-years old Moroccan man was killed after a dispute broke out between him and a parking guard with a “yellow vest.” The crime took place on the first day of Eid Al Fitr 2022 in Fes.
Local media reported that the parking guard forced the victim to pay in order to park his motorcycle, in what he claimed to be “his parking.”
The deceased refused to pay the requested fee, which led to a fight between the two, resulting in the death of the motorcycle owner.
The crime is the latest in a series of “yellow vest” guards-related scandals in Morocco. The country’s unofficial parking guards have consistently ignited public outrage for unlawfully taking over a street or neighborhood and then imposing their rules and fees on residents.
In Morocco, people can simply buy a yellow vest, pick a street or neighborhood, take over as a parking guard, and impose their chosen “parking fees” on citizens.
After news emerged of the tragic death of the Fez motorcycle owner, many activists and social media users rose to the forefront to denounce the government’s failure to intervene in this issue that has been weighing on Moroccans, especially vehicle owners, for years.
Netizens stressed the need to once and for all put an end to the “yellow vest” guards phenomenon as most of these self-appointed parking attendants regularly resort to insults, aggressions, and threats when a person refuses to pay the imposed fee.
“Boycott Moul Gilet,” a Facebook group created for documenting unpleasant encounters with parking attendants, now has over 244,000 members.
Many of the group members denounced the Fez heinous crime, saying that “it should not be tolerated because we have all become threatened by yellow vast guards.”
