Rabat – Different units of Morocco’s police forces teamed up on Tuesday to arrest a knifeman suspected of a robbery at a bank in Casablanca.
A statement from the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) said the arrest was the result of a close collaboration between the judicial police of Marrakech and the services of the General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST).
The suspect had fled Casablanca a few hours after committing the robbery, and a preliminary investigation made it possible to identify the suspect’s identity and his location on the outskirts of the city of Marrakech, noted the statement.
An investigation later revealed that the suspect was in possession of MAD 82,850 ($8,263), while Police also seized a car that the suspect abandoned in Ttit Mellil in Casablanca. The car included a “transcribed plan for the robbery. Police identified the suspect as a 33-year-old man.
The suspect threatened the bank employees and used a car of a company where he worked to flee the scene.
Following his arrest, the suspect was placed in police custody for further investigations into the case.
The Central Bureau of Judicial Investigation will continue to investigate to shed further light on the case and determine the nature of threats the suspect made during his escape attempt, DGSN said.
According to DGSN’s 2021 annual report, Morocco has witnessed a decline in the number of violent crimes over the past six years, accounting for only 4% of the country’s general crimes figures.
