Rabat – The Arab Parliament, the Arab League’s legislative body, condemned on Sunday the Israeli forces’ violations in Al-Aqsa mosque.
“The Arab Parliament strongly condemns the raiding of the Holy Al-Aqsa Mosque’s courtyards by large numbers of occupiers and zionist extremists who raised the occupier’s flags in its courtyards,” a press release read.
It added that the march, which saw Israeli occupiers assault Palestinians, will lead to more tensions and instability in the region, and that the violence that took place on Sunday is an extension of violations by the Israeli army.
Sunday saw Israeli nationalists and army forces marching through Al-Aqsa courtyards and assaulting Palestinians, all while chanting Islamophobic slogans.
The assaults came as part of the annual far-right “Flag March” in Jerusalem, with this year’s taking place amid rising tensions due to continuing violence in Jerusalem and the recent killing of veteran Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh.
The marchers chanted slogans such as “Muhammad is dead,” an Islamophobic slogan, along with other chants like “Death to Arabs” and “Shireen is dead,” referring to Abu Akleh.
The Arab Parliament called on the international community to fight such acts, and stressed the importance of stopping any actions that “target Jerusalem’s holy sites, and its Muslim and Christian identity.”
Ahead of the march, authorities instructed Palestinians to close down their businesses and stay indoors.
According to the Palestinian Red Crescent Society, 79 Palestinians were wounded in Jerusalem during the attacks, in addition to another 163 in the West Bank, 20 of whom were hit by live bullets.
Footage shared online showed Israeli settlers hitting and pepper-spraying a Palestinian woman in her fifties, as well as attacking journalists who were documenting the event.
Police said 2,600 Israelis stormed Al-Aqsa mosque earlier, raising flags and performing prayers, despite international agreements saying that only Muslims may pray in the mosque.
