Rabat – Israel and Morocco are expected to sign a milestone technology agreement during a potential visit of the Israeli Minister of Science and Technology Orit Farkash-Hacohen to the North African country.

Israeli news outlet Ynet News has reported that the visit will mark the signing of the first-ever technological cooperation between the two countries.

Ynet News said the Israeli minister will arrive in Morocco later today to sign the technology cooperation agreement with Abdellatif Miraoui, the Moroccan Minister of Higher Education, Scientific Research, and Innovation.

“Cooperation will include Artificial intelligence, agricultural technologies, water management, and water desalination, desertification, food processing, technologies, biotechnology, renewable energy, medical technologies,” the Israeli outlet reported.

Einat Levi, a member of the Israeli diplomatic mission in Morocco, said that the agreement reflects the “perfect finish accord for this, which was described as the beginning of a beautiful tech-friendship.”

Since resuming diplomatic ties in December 2020, Morocco and Israel have been vowing to strengthen cooperation in different fields, particularly innovation.

The two countries launched on Monday this week a three-day forum aimed at increasing bilateral trade, notably in the field of technological and innovative solutions.

The forum, called “Connect to Innovate,” will conclude today in Casablanca after featuring intensive exchange of ideas and networking between investors, researchers, and high-ranking officials from both countries.

During the event’s opening ceremony, Israel and Morocco signed 13 Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) to improve their cooperation in high-tech and innovative solutions to tackle a wide range of emerging, development-related challenges.

Morocco and Israel declared the re-establishment of relations in December 2020. The news was much welcomed by the US government, with which the two countries signed a joint declaration to reflect their shared commitment to boosting cooperation and diplomatic ties.

Since the reestablishment of relations, there have been historic exchanges of visits as senior Moroccan and Israeli officials visited each other’s country to discuss deepening bilateral cooperation.

In March, Morocco’s Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita traveled to Israel to participate in the Negev Summit. The event convened top diplomats from Arab countries that have signed the US-brokered Abraham Accords, pledging to resume ties with Israel and contribute to consolidating “economic prosperity and stability” in the MENA region.
