Rabat – Israeli forces on Saturday killed 17-year-old Amjad Fayed during a pre-dawn raid in the Jenin camp in the occupied West Bank.
Local and international media reported that Fayed was shot in the neck and chest along with another young Palestinian aged 18 who was wounded by a live bullet to the abdomen. The second person was transferred to the local hospital and is currently in a critical condition, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.
Israeli forces stormed the Jenin camps on Saturday morning, leading to confrontations with young Palestinian men and boys on Haifa Street, where Fayed was killed.
The Quds News Network reported that hundreds of Palestinians attended the funeral procession of Fayed earlier today.
Established in 1953, the Jenin camp is a front of Palestinian resistance. According to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, the camp has four schools that serve 2,000 students and only one health center that provides primary health care.
During the second Intifada and specifically in 2002, the Israeli military occupied the camp after ten days of intensive fighting. It destroyed more than 400 houses and severely damaged hundreds of others, leading to the displacement of more than a quarter of the camp’s population, said the relief agency.
Israeli destructive and illegal operations in the Jenin camp and other occupied territories have resulted in the death of thousands of Palestinians over the years and the displacement of more.
On May 13 around 8 a.m. Israeli soldiers used Ahed Mohammad Rida Mereb, a 16-year-old Palestinian girl, as a human shield in the Al Hadaf neighborhood of Jenin.
Ayed Abu Eqtaish, accountability program director at Defense for Children International in Palestine, reported and condemned the news.
“International law is explicit and absolutely prohibits the use of children as human shields by armed forces or armed groups,” he said, adding that “Israeli forces intentionally putting a child in grave danger in order to shield themselves constitutes a war crime.”
Mereb was forced to stand in the front of the Israeli military vehicle after Israeli forces emptied her family house and bombed it with rocket-propelled grenades.
Israeli violations of international law
Israel’s violations of human rights continue as the international community asks for justice for Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh who was shot by an Israeli soldier while wearing her press vest.
On Thursday, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization condemned Israeli attacks on healthcare facilities.
“We’re deeply concerned that 58 attacks on healthcare in the occupied Palestinian territory have been verified by WHO since the beginning of 2022. They caused one death and 47 injuries. #NotATarge,” he tweeted.
Amid international condemnation, the Israeli Defense Forces said in a tweet on May 19 that Jenin “has become a hotspot for terrorist organizations” with “heavily armed militant and illegal weapons.”
The forces further noted that 19 Israeli died during seven “terrorist attacks” in 2022, three of which were conducted by residents of Jenin camp.
Recalling the second Intifada (2000-2005), the Israeli forces said that Palestinians organized “terrorist attacks including suicide bombings, shootings, and stabbing” that led to the “murder” of 1,000 people in Israel.
The UN has reported that 4,228 Palestinians, 1,024 Israelis, and 63 foreign citizens died during the second Intifada. “For every person killed, approximately seven were also injured,” it added.
