Rabat – The Forum of Legislative Presidents of Central America and the Caribbean Basin (FOPREL) awarded King Mohammed VI the Esquipulas Peace Prize, the highest distinction that the organization gives.
The awarding of the prize came following a resolution adopted during the 26th extraordinary session of the forum, held in Rabat from May 19 to 21.
The resolution says the awarding of the prize is “an act of homage and consideration to the wisdom and courage of the King, who puts general interests above all else to set aside differences and work consistently to achieve peace between peoples.”
The organization said the monarch is “a model to follow” for those who endeavor to preserve the values of peace between the different cultures of the world.
Named after the Guatemalan town of Esquipulas, which hosted the signing of the Central American Peace Accords in 1987, the prize aims to promote values of friendship, understanding, tolerance, and solidarity among different peoples.
FOPREL was created in 1994 to harmonize the legislation of member countries and develop consultation mechanisms between them and other states, as well as executive branches of power.
Morocco has been an observer member in the organization since 2014.
In September 2021, the Moroccan monarch was awarded the Jean Jaures Prize for Promoting Peace by the European Center for Peace and Conflict resolution for helping establish a “community of justice and peace between people and nations.”
