Fez – The Royal Moroccan Football Federation is reportedly planning a friendly match between Morocco’s Atlas Lions and the North Macedonia football team.
As part of the preparations for the highly-anticipated World Cup 2022, Morocco’s Royal Football Federation (FRMF) sent a friendly game request to its North Macedonian counterpart, news outlet Sportmedia reported on May 10.
The news outlet further noted that the friendly game is likely to be held in September, a few months before the World Cup kick-off.
While Morocco’s Atlas Lions secured their ticket for the 2022 Qatar World Cup, North Macedonia couldn’t make it to the world’s most prestigious football competition.
But the North Macedonian team had a remarkable World Cup playoffs campaign, delivering outstanding performances against top-tier opponents like Italy and Portugal.
According to Sportmedia, this is the reason why the team has caught the attention of World-Cup qualified nations looking to play competitive, high-quality warm-up games before the World Cup.
“Macedonia is obviously becoming an attractive opponent for the world’s strongest national teams, which are looking to prepare for the big competitions,” the news outlet argued.

As Morocco has been placed in a tough World Cup group, the Atlas Lions have been linked with anticipated friendly games against well-reputed opponents, most notably the United States football team.
On April 20, the US Soccer Federation announced that the United States football team (USMNT) will face Morocco in their first 2022 Qatar World Cup warm-up match on June 1 at TQL Stadium in Cincinnati, Ohio.
This will make Morocco’s Atlas Lions the first African squad to play against the US since Gregg Berhalter took over as head coach of the USMNT in 2018.
The last match between the two teams took place in 2006 in Nashville, US, during the Send-Off Series ahead of the 2006 Germany World Cup.
