Rabat – The European Parliament on Tuesday endorsed the Committee on Artificial Intelligence (AIDA) roadmap aimed at making the EU a leader in artificial intelligence by 2030.
AIDA’s final report about “AI in a digital age” renews Europe’s calls for a regulatory framework to make the EU an AI leader.
Meanwhile, the members of the European Parliament (MEPs) have identified several policy options that could unlock AI’s potential in terms of health, the environment, and climate change.
The report also outlines several recommendations aimed at implementing the global standards for ethical AI infrastructure.
When combined with the necessary support for infrastructure, education and training, AI can also increase the productivity of capital and labor, contribute to innovation, drive sustainable growth and create jobs.
AIDA, which was established in September 2020, noted that the technology could also serve as a tool to fight against pandemics, cyberattacks, among other challenges.
“With this report, we are clearly demonstrating that AI will drive digitalisation and be a game changer in the global race for digitalisation,” commented AIDA rapporteur Axel Voss, assuring that this AI roadmap puts the EU in a leading position.
With an aim of building a human-centric AI to serve people while respecting their privacy, Voss emphasized the need to have an innovative regulatory framework and a digital market with clear standards.
He also spoke about maximizing investments for a sustainable digital infrastructure accessible to everyone.
AIDA Committee Chairman Dragoș Tudorache tweeted, “Artificial Intelligence is no longer a technical subject. AI is geopolitical, and we need to bolster cooperation with our likeminded, democratic, partners in setting the rules of the digital future.”
The report aims to shape the forthcoming EU parliamentary work on AI, in particular the AI legislation that is currently being examined by the Internal Market and Consumer Protection (IMCO) and Civil Liberties, and the Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) Committees.
The AI legislation is due to be voted on jointly by the two committees at the end of September 2022.
