Fez – Morocco’s national football team has ranked 22nd in the latest FIFA Ranking, gaining two places globally and retaining its position as the second best team in Africa.

The latest ranking, which FIFA updated today, shows Morocco earning seven additional points, rising to 1,558 from 1551, since the last ranking issued on March 31.

With this overall score, Morocco has ditched its previous 24th position, moving to the 22nd spot ahead of Iran (23rd), Japan (24th), and Serbia (25th).

Atlas Lions’ latest World Cup qualification, coupled with its notable performance in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2023 qualifiers, have been key in improving its world ranking.

In the African continent, Senegal, the Africa Cup of Nations winning team, has retained its position as the continent’s top national team, less than 40 points ahead of Morocco.

The West African team has also enhanced its world ranking by moving up by two spots (18th) from its previous ranking.

Meanwhile, Tunisia has moved to the third position in the African ranking, passing Nigeria which lagged behind in the fourth position.

Cameroon comes in fifth place followed by Egypt (6th) and Algeria (7th).

Globally, Brazil still dominates the football hierarchy, followed by Belgium.

Meanwhile, Argentina has moved to third place ahead of France, which dropped to the fourth position globally.

England (fifth), Spain (sixth), and Italy (seventh) all follow closely.

Nevertheless, despite its improved FIFA ranking, Morocco’s Atlas Lions’ recent poor performances have cast a shadow of doubt over the team’s capacity to compete against tough opponents in the upcoming World Cup.

Many fans hold Vahid Halilhodzic, the head coach of Morocco’s national football team, responsible for the Atlas Lions’ disappointing performance, repeatedly calling for his dismissal before the start of the world football’s most prestigious tournament.

In the latest games against South Africa and Liberia for the AFCON 2023 qualifiers, calls for Halilhodzic’s dismissal echoed throughout the stadium.
