Rabat – King Mohammed VI has granted a royal pardon to 979 prisoners and people out on bail on the occasion of Eid Al Adha 2022.

While only 834 of these pardoned individuals are currently imprisoned, all 979 had been convicted by Moroccan courts for violating laws within the country, according to the Ministry of Justice.

Of the imprisoned group, King Mohammed VI ordered the immediate cancellation of the sentences of nine detainees.

He also granted a remission of the prison sentence of 818 prisoners, while seven others who are currently serving life sentences have received a sentence reduction.

Of the 134 convicted individuals not currently imprisoned, 21 people were freed of their prison sentence, while seven people were granted pardon of the prison time but will still be paying their fines.

A total of 104 people were freed of fines they were required to pay, while two were exempted from both fines and prison time.

The pardon included 11 prisoners convicted of terrorism and extremism, who have shown that they no longer hold extremist views and are ready to be reintegrated into society.

Of these detainees, three received a pardon for the remainder of their prison sentence, five were freed from both prison time and fines, two benefited from a remission of their sentences, while one prisoner who is serving a life sentence benefited from a sentence reduction.

On religious and national celebrations, such as Eid Al Adha, several prisoners receive the royal pardon for their good behavior and willingness to reintegrate into society.

On the occasion of Eid Al Fitr in May, King Mohammed VI granted a royal pardon to 958 prisoners and people out on bail.
