Laayoune – The team representing Morocco in the 63rd International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO), which is being held this year in Oslo, scored the North African country’s highest score since 2004.

The Moroccan team of six young mathematicians earned a total of 82 points in the Olympiad, managing to secure four honorable mentions that testify to the mathematical potential of young Moroccans.

The team consisted of Abdelkayoum Kaddouri, Mouad Enoua, Saad Chairi, Adam El Kharraze, El Mehdi EL Kihel, and Anas El Boukari. The young prodigies scored 19, 17, 17, 15, 8, and 6 respectively.

Their cumulative scores represent Morocco’s highest mark since 2004, when the country’s representatives scored a total of 88 points.

In the MENA region, Algeria scored a total of 75 points and Tunisia secured 85 points.

Nabila Freidji, the Moroccan ambassador to the Kingdom of Norway and the Republic of Iceland, hosted a ceremony in honor of the Moroccan team and to inspire them to  keep representing Morocco honorably in their respective academic endeavors and future IMOs.

This year marks the 63rd edition of the IMO, with 589 students, including 68 girls, from 104 countries participating in the event.

Last year’s IMO was hosted by the Russian federation in St. Petersburg. 619 participants from 107 countries took part in the 2021 IMO. Morocco’s national team scored three honorable mentions that year.

The IMO, the earliest edition of the International Science Olympiads, is a competition in mathematics for pre-university students. Romania hosted the first IMO in 1959. Save for 1980, the Olympiad has been held every year since 1959.
