Rabat – The FIFA World Cup 2026 witnessed another historic first on Thursday as referee Tori Penso and assistant referees Brooke Mayo and Kathryn Nesbitt became the tournament’s only all-woman officiating trio, taking charge of a Group A match between Czechia and South Africa in Atlanta.
The American trio’s appointment marked another milestone in the growing presence of female officials at football’s highest level, with all three making their tournament debuts together on the same stage.
According to the US Soccer, the trio already made history in 2025 as the first all-female on-field officiating crew to oversee a Lamar Hunt US Open Cup Final, officiating Austin FC against Nashville SC.
Speaking ahead of the match, assistant referee Mayo described the World Cup assignment as the result of years of sacrifice, preparation, and relentless work.
“When I found out we had earned a spot, I felt elated and excited to represent the US Soccer and Concacaf and showcase all the hard work,” Mayo told US Soccer.
Mayo explained that the road to the World Cup demanded intense physical preparation, extensive international experience, and personal sacrifices away from family life.
“When you are chasing a dream, you are not the only one who sacrifices — it’s all of your loved ones too,” she said.
While Mayo insisted she often views her crew as “just a normal trio that has earned their place,” she acknowledges the wider significance of their appointment for women in football.
“I know we represent something bigger than ourselves,” Mayo said. “There is no limiting factor for you to achieve your dreams as long as you are willing to sacrifice, put in the work, and take advantage when the opportunity comes.”
The trio’s historic appearance also comes amid increasing visibility for women referees at major international tournaments, following FIFA’s decision to include female officials in recent men’s World Cups.
Mayo added that she hopes young girls watching the tournament will feel represented by seeing women officiate on football’s biggest stage.
“I hope they realize that they are strong and capable,” she said.
Their appointment in Atlanta was largely hailed online, with many fans highlighting the significance of an all-woman crew.
