Rabat – Temperatures are set to reach 47 degrees Celsius in several provinces across Morocco, according to the latest forecast by the country’s weather office.
The General Directorate of Meteorology (DMN) said today that temperatures ranging between 44 and 47 degrees in the provinces of Sidi Kacem, Sidi Slimane, Rehamna, Marrakech, Youssoufia, Chichaoua, Taroudant, Assa-Zag, and Es-Semara on Monday.
The orange-level weather alert also forecasts temperatures between 40 and 44 degrees for Larache, Ouezzane, Taourirt, Guercif, Oujda-Angad, Fez, Taounate, Moulay Yacoub, Taza, Meknes, Khemisset, Khenifra, Beni, Mellal, and Fquih Ben Salah.
The same weather will affect Khouribga, Khenifra, Settat, Berrechid, Benslimane, Sidi Bennour, El Kelaa des Sraghan, Zagora, Errachidia, and Tata.
Cities and towns nearby Raba will also experience the heatwave, including the provinces of Sale-Skhirat-Temara, El Jadida, Essaouira, Safi, Tangier-Assilah, Fahs-Anjra, Nador, Agadir-Ida-Ou-Tanane, Tiznit, Inzegan-Ait Mellouk, Cthouka IA Baha, Tan-Tan, Guelmim, and Boujdour.
Aoussered, Oued Ed-Dahab, Sidi Ifni, Tarfaya, and Laayoune will experience the same weather. The new heatwave will last until Tuesday.
Morocco has been experiencing a series of heatwaves since the beginning of July, and the extremely high temperatures have notably led to wildfires that have damaged thousands of hectares of land in several regions across the country.
Last week, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) warned that the heatwaves recently seen across the world will be the new normal in the future.
“We have broken an all-time high in the UK. Heatwaves will happen more frequently because of climate change,” said WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas. “We will see stronger extremes. We haven’t been able to reduce our emissions globally.”
