Rabat – Morocco’s men’s and women’s national teams won the African beach volleyball championship on Monday evening in Agadir.

Morocco’s men’s team secured their third victory in the continental championship after the pair Mohamed Abicha/Zouheir Elgraoui defeated Mozambique’s duo Ainadino Martinho/Jorge Monjane in 2 sets (21-19/21-15). Another team from Mozambique ranked third in the championship.

Elgraoui took to Instagram on Monday to celebrate the victory, sharing a picture with his partner Abicha. The caption said: “And the 3rd one in the pocket #championsofafrica.”

In the women’s games, Morocco’s teams A and B faced each other in the final, securing Morocco’s gold and silver medals. The pair Imane Zeroual/Nora Darrhar won the gold after defeating the duo Siad Mahassine/Imane Yakki in two sets, scoring 21-14  and 21-19. Mozambique followed in third position.

Following an iconic battle between the two Moroccan teams, Darrhar broke into tears. She shared pictures capturing the heartwarming moment on Instagram on Monday with a full-cap caption saying, “African Champions and qualified to the world championship.”

Yakki, for her part, told the pan-African news outlet Africa News that her team “had a hard time with a good team of Mozambique, good team of Mauritius too. It’s cool to see so many teams for each country.”

Organized by the Royal Moroccan Volleyball Federation, the African Beach Volleyball Championship saw the participation of the best teams in the continent from July 27 to August 1.

While the beach volleyball sport is relatively new in Africa, the discipline has gradually attracted more athletes and fans across the continent.

Bouchra Hajij, president of the African Confederation of Volleyball (CAVB), said: “Africa can progress, hand in hand we will go very far.”
