Rabat – Moroccan security services at the Tangier-Med port succeeded in aborting an international drug trafficking attempt of 17,970 psychotropic tablets on Tuesday.
The psychotropic tablets were of Rivotril brand, according to a statement from Morocco’s General Directorate of National Security (DGSN).
Also called clonazepam, Rivotril is used as a sedative to decrease seizures or anxiety. The medicine is only prescribed by doctors.
According to DGSN, police seized the psychotropic tablets during a control operation on board a trailer truck for international transport of goods.
The Tangier Med police operation took place based on intelligence from Morocco’s General Directorate of Territorial Surveillance (DGST).
The search operation on the vehicle, which was registered in Morocco, took place immediately after its arrival from a Spanish port. The drug was carefully concealed inside cavities arranged in the trailer.
Investigation enabled police to arrest a 37-year old Moroccan national who is in custody for further probe to shine further light on the case.
The operation is part of Morocco’s approach against drug trafficking and DGSN-DGST’s efforts to fight against all forms of cross-border crimes.
In 2021, joint operations between DGSN and DGST resulted in the seizing of 1,437,362 psychotropic tablets including 53m756 ecstasy tablets. The number represented a record increase of over 201% compared to a year earlier.
In the same year, police handled 82,959 cases related to the possession and trafficking of drugs. Security services referred 103,589 people to courts, including 261 foreigners.
