Laayoune – Morocco’s Wydad Athletic Club (WAC) has announced today the signing of Houcine Ammouta as its new head coach.
Ammouta will now replace Walid Regragui as the new official coach of the Casablanca-based club. This choice was made after both signing parties agreed to ambitions of maintaining the club’s dominance on the national and continental level.
After Morocco’s national team coach Vahid Halilhodzic left his post last week, Regragui made the decision not to extend his contract with Wydad amidst speculations that he could coach the Moroccan national team competing in this year’s World Cup in Qatar.

WAC hopes to officially introduce the new coach during a press conference in the upcoming few days.
Ammouta formerly coached WAC between 2017-2018, when his team won the CAF Champions League in November 2017 after defeating Egyptian club Al Ahly 1-0.
Ammouta won the Throne Cup and the African Confederation Cup with FAR Rabat in 2010 as part of his coaching career. He subsequently moved to Al-Sadd and helped win the Qatar Stars League and the Emir of Qatar Cup twice in 2012 and 2013.
Ammouta’s return to the team comes only three weeks before the CAF Super Cup finals, where Wydad AC will face off against RS Berkane. This historic game will be played on September 10.
Two teams from the same country have never before competed against one another in the African Super Cup, which makes this year’s super cup a historic first. This only further adds to a sense of Morocco’s growing dominance over the African football scene.
In order for an African team to qualify for the CAF Super Cup, it must win either the Championship League title or the Confederation Cup title.
