Tangier Police Arrest ISIS Suspect for Attempted Murder

Rabat – Police in Tangier arrested an ISIS suspect for his alleged involvement in an attempted murder on Sunday, August 28.

General Directorate of National Security (DGSN) said the murder attempt was part of the suspect’s terrorist attack with the aim of “seriously undermining public order.”

The police identified the suspect as a 36-year-old man who tried to kill an individual who lived with him on a construction site.

The suspect justified his murder attempt by saying that the man who lived with him did not respect the “tenets of the region.”

A preliminary investigation found that the suspect used a drill to physically assault the man during his attack.

Police arrived at the scene,  where the suspect tried to flee by jumping from the first floor of the construction site.

Searches in the defendant’s room led to the seizure of weapons as well as extremist publications, and a black cloth bearing the flag of “the terror organization.”

Police also seized manuscripts, computer equipment, as well as cameras, and two phone batteries among others. Police will hand the seized material to forensic science laboratories for further investigation.

Police handed the case to the Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations (BCIJ) to determine the possible links of the suspect with terror organizations.

The operation is part of Morocco’s counterterrorism approach seeking to neutralize the security threats of terror groups and suspects active across the country.

Morocco’s BCIJ has run several security operations leading to the arrests of multiple ISIS suspects across the country.

One of the latest operations was earlier this August, when the BCIJ arrested an ISIS-affiliated suspect in Tetouan, Northern Morocco for his alleged involvement in planning terrorist attacks.

The 36-year-old suspect has been active on social networks where he shared and promoted “extremist subversive ideology and incitement of the planning of criminal projects targeting individuals as well as public and private infrastructure.”
